Overbet
A bet bigger than the pot.

- What it means
- An overbet puts in more than the pot. It gives the caller a worse price, so it folds out more and wins more when called.
- How it is calculated
- Overbets fit when the geometric size is above pot, which happens when the SPR is above (3^n − 1) ÷ 2 for n streets left: 1 on the river, 4 on the turn, 13 on the flop. They also fit a polarized range with more of the nuts against a capped range.
- Worked example
- On the river the pot is 20bb with 40bb behind, an SPR of 2. A pot bet leaves 20bb behind, so only a 2x pot overbet gets the stack in. A 2x bluff needs 67% folds to break even.
- Why it matters
- Holding more of the nuts than your opponent is when the biggest bets win the most. Overbetting with a range that is only medium strength just gets called by better.
