Cold deck
A deck stacked in advance and swapped into a game to cheat, or slang for a run of brutal cards.

- What it means
- A cold deck is a deck arranged ahead of time and switched in for the real one, so the cheat knows who gets which cards. Cold decking is the act of making that swap. Players also say they were cold-decked when the cards were simply cruel, such as a big hand losing to a bigger one.
- How it is calculated
- A cheat sets up a second strong hand for the victim so they put all their chips in, then deals themself the one hand that beats it. In the slang sense nobody cheated: a cold deck is a cooler, a spot where both players had a hand too strong to fold.
- Worked example
- You are dealt K♠ K♦ and the flop comes K♣ 7♠ 7♦, a full house. You get 100bb in and lose to 7♣ 7♥, four of a kind. In a home game, that deal by a known card mechanic is a cold deck; in a fair game it is a cooler.
- Why it matters
- Losing a pot like this is not a mistake, so do not change your play because of it. In a home game, a new deck brought out only for one hand, or the same player dealing big hands to themself, is a reason to stop playing.
