Flat call
To just call a raise when you could have re-raised; also called flatting.

- What it means
- A flat call, or flat, is a call of a raise before the flop. The word stresses the choice: you had the option to 3-bet and took the cheaper line.
- How it is calculated
- Hands flat when they are good enough to play but gain little by building the pot, and when they would have to fold to a 4-bet. Flatting works best in position.
- Worked example
- The cutoff opens to 2.5bb and you call on the button with 9♠ 8♠ rather than 3-betting. You have flatted the open.
- Why it matters
- Against an open you can fold, flat or 3-bet, and the charts show a share for each. Knowing the word tells you which of the three a lesson means.
