Opening ranges
Which hands to raise when everyone before you has folded, and how that changes with position.
Last updated
- What it means
- The opening skills cover raising first in, from early position, late position and the small blind. Each position has its own chart.
- How it is calculated
- The more players left to act behind you, the more likely one of them has a strong hand, so early positions open tight and the button opens wide. The small blind opens against the big blind alone but plays the hand out of position.
- Worked example
- At a 6-max table under the gun has five players behind and opens about 11% of hands in this app's 100bb charts. The button has only the two blinds behind and opens about 46%, roughly four times as many combos.
- Why it matters
- Opening too wide from early position is a common and expensive beginner leak, and learning the charts fixes almost all of it.
