UTG (under the gun)
The first seat to act before the flop, just left of the big blind, so it opens the tightest range.
Last updated
- What it means
- UTG sits directly to the left of the big blind. Before the flop every other player acts after it. At a full table the next seats are UTG+1 and UTG+2.
- How it is calculated
- With everyone still to act behind, any hand UTG opens has to stand up to five or more players who may hold something strong.
- Worked example
- In this app's 100bb charts UTG opens about 11% of hands, against about 46% from the button.
- Why it matters
- Learning the tight UTG range first gives you a solid floor; every later seat opens wider from there.
