VPIP
Voluntarily put money in pot: the share of hands a player calls or raises before the flop.
Last updated
- What it means
- VPIP counts every hand where a player chose to put chips in before the flop, by calling or raising. Posting a blind does not count, and neither does checking the big blind.
- How it is calculated
- VPIP = hands where the player called or raised preflop ÷ hands dealt. It is the horizontal axis of the profile chart: tight on the left, loose on the right.
- Worked example
- A player who calls or raises in 26 of 100 hands has a VPIP of 26%. A nit sits near 14%, and a maniac near 42%.
- Why it matters
- VPIP is the fastest read on how many hands someone plays. A high VPIP means their range is weak, so you can value-bet thinner and defend wider.
