Bet and raise
Putting in chips when nobody has yet is a bet; putting in more than an earlier bet is a raise.

- What it means
- The first chips put in on a street are a bet. Increasing that bet is a raise, and raising again is a re-raise, called a 3-bet before the flop.
- How it is calculated
- A raise must add at least as much as the last bet or raise did, which sets the minimum raise. The largest raise is all your chips.
- Worked example
- Before the flop the big blind is 1bb. UTG raises to 3bb, adding 2bb, so the smallest re-raise is to 3 + 2 = 5bb.
- Why it matters
- Betting and raising win the pot when everyone folds and build a bigger pot when you have the best hand. Both are how you take control of a hand.
