Hand families
Groups of starting hands that play alike, such as pocket pairs or suited aces.

- What it means
- The hand family skills cut across every spot and ask how you play a type of hand: pocket pairs, suited aces, suited broadways, suited connectors, offsuit broadways and offsuit trash.
- How it is calculated
- A decision counts toward the family of the hand you were dealt, whatever the position or stack. Each family shares the traits that decide how it plays: flush potential, straight potential, high cards or a pair already made.
- Worked example
- There are 13 pocket pairs with 6 combos each, 78 combos in all. The 12 suited aces, AKs to A2s, have 4 combos each, 48 in all, and they block the nut flush and the villain's aces.
- Why it matters
- A leak with a hand type, such as overplaying offsuit broadways, shows up here even when it is spread thinly across many spots.
