Villain

Your opponent in a hand: the player whose range you are playing against.

What it means
Poker writing calls you the hero and the player you are up against the villain. It is only a label for the other side of the hand; it says nothing about how they play.
How it is calculated
When a question says the villain bets or the villain folds, read it as your opponent in this hand. With more than one opponent left, it means the one whose action you are answering.
Worked example
You raise on the button and only the big blind calls. You are the hero and the big blind is the villain: 1 opponent, whose range you read from that call.
Why it matters
Every spot in this app is described from your seat, so one short word for the other player keeps the questions brief.
